Voting Begins Today!

Good news – I do not have an opponent in the upcoming election!  I’m greatly heartened (and relieved) to think people value my service and want me to continue to represent them on the School Board.

Although I am running unopposed, I do ask for your support and vote.  Early voting starts January, 16th and runs through January, 31st.  Election Day is February 5th.  If you’re not sure where to vote, check the Election Commission website.

My race is non-partisan so you can vote for me no matter which party’s primary you participate in. I did a practice run on the voting machines tonight, and the ballots are a little tricky.  If you vote in the Democratic Primary it looks like all the offices are on one page, but the School Board contest, and my name, are orphaned on the second page, so please complete the entire ballot!  The Republican ballot is much longer since the first 3 pages are all for delegates to the National Convention.  Again, School Board is the last race, at the very end of the 4th page.  I appreciate you taking the time to scroll through ballot and vote for me!

I am proud of my accomplishments to date and have ambitious goals for the second term.  I’ve posted my accomplishments and goals on my website if you’d like to read them.  As always, I welcome your comments.

Election Night Party at my House

You’re invited to an Election Night Party on February 5th at our home, 941 Eleanor Street .  The festivities will start at 7pm.  I want to thank you for your support over the last 4 years and appreciate your vote for re-election.  It will also be fun to watch the returns for other local races, and of course the Presidential Primaries.  Please let me know if you plan to stop by.

Superintendent Search

The application for our Superintendent Search is now available. The deadline is February 20th and all application materials should be turned in to the search firm.  You can see results of our survey on characteristics we want in a Superintendent and more details about the search here.  If you know some good candidates, please encourage them to apply!

Revised Transfer Policy

We recently revised the transfer policy so that any child may attend a school outside his or her zoned school, as long as there is enough space and the family can provide transportation.  For this year spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, although we may move to a lottery system in the future.

We also moved the entire application process back two months so families will know sooner the outcome of their application.  This year’s window for accepting transfer applications is January 28th – February 22nd.  You can read the entire policy here.

The Magnet School transfer period also begins on January 28th, but will remain open until April 25th.  Magnet slots will be allocated by lottery, as they have been since the inception of the magnet program

To apply for a transfer pick up an application from your base school and turn it into your base school.  They will give you a copy of the form with the date and time of receipt stamped on it.

Teacher Supply Depot Open January 26th

For you teachers reading this, the Teacher Supply Depot will be open on Saturday, January 26th from 8am – 2pm.  The depot is located at 232 Churchwell Avenue at the former Oakwood School .

The Teacher Supply Depot is a free store where Knox County ’s public school teachers and teacher assistants can obtain items to enhance classroom learning.  The depot is open Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.—3:30 for donations.  Thank you Knox County Council PTA for coordinating this valuable service!

Please remember to vote!
