First Term Accomplishments 


Academic Achievement is Priority #1

  • Insist on high expectations for all students

  • Successfully lobbied the State for greater funding (BEP 2.0)

  • Strong supporter of Fulton’s Re-design efforts, with added staff and resources

  • Actively involved in evaluating and improving Project GRAD and magnet programs

  • Funded new literacy initiative

  • Funded Knox County’s first public pre-schools  

 

Recruiting and Retaining Teachers

  • I consistently advocate for salary and benefit increases, including a 4% raise this year

  • Developed and passed a policy to encourage part-time teaching and job-sharing

  • Support Tuition Reimbursement for teachers to become certified in hard to staff subjects

  • Strong advocate for innovative pay plans, such as the Teacher Advancement Program 

 

Encourage Parental Involvement

  • Instituted Parent Portal, so parents can check status of their child’s coursework on-line

  • Implemented PayPams, so parents can pay for school lunches and other fees on-line

  • Funded Parental Notification System so schools can easily notify parents about absences, school events, weather closings, or emergencies

  • Developed and passed a sibling priority admission policy

  • Improved transfer policy that now offers greater public school choice 

Public Input Essential to Good Governance

  • Added a student representative to the School Board

  • Always respond promptly to constituent concerns

  • Help parents navigate the school system bureaucracy and get questions answered

  • Offer Public Forum at all Meetings

  • Actively solicit input from constituents 

 

Advocate for Second District Schools

  • Brought more teachers, staff and resources to 2nd District Schools

  • I worked to get $1.8m in facilities improvements in our district, including: 
          - Resolving elevator delays at Belle Morris, Central, Gresham
     
          - Installing new portables at Shannondale and Belle Morris 
          - Installing a covered walkway and new auditorium seats at Whittle Springs 

          - Funding design of a ‘Green’ addition at Belle Morris

  • Helping Christenberry get a $20,000 grant for ADA accessibility improvements

  • I read every week at Inskip (2005), Shannondale (2006), Sterchi (2007), and Christenberry (2008)



    Second Term Goals

  • Hire excellent new Superintendent

  • Continue to push for improvements in urban schools

  • Develop a performance pay plan for teachers in collaboration with KCEA

  • Restore Foreign Language and Gifted programs for middle school students

  • Continue to push for smarter growth policies, so the impact on schools is taken into consideration
